The newly appointed Rivers State Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Dr. Dennis Reuben, has assured residents of his commitment to safeguarding lives, property, and critical national assets in the state.
Dr. Reuben gave the assurance during his inaugural address at the official handover ceremony held at the Command headquarters in Port Harcourt on Tuesday. He took over from his predecessor, Commandant Joachin Okafor.
He emphasized that his administration would uphold discipline, professionalism, and strict adherence to the Corps’ mandate, warning that individuals engaged in criminal activities would face the full weight of the law.
“We will not fail the people of Rivers State, we will not fail the nation. Those with questionable intentions should desist, as we will not hesitate to bring offenders to justice,” he stated.
The Commandant pledged to strengthen collaboration with the Rivers State Government, sister security agencies, traditional rulers, community leaders, civil society groups, and the media to enhance security across the state.
Highlighting security as a collective responsibility, Dr. Reuben urged residents to remain vigilant and provide timely information to security agencies. “If you see something, say something,” he advised.
He also announced plans to prioritize personnel training and retraining, intelligence gathering, operational efficiency, and improved welfare for officers. According to him, departments and units that have underperformed will be revitalized.

Dr. Reuben reaffirmed the Corps’ commitment to its statutory responsibilities, including the protection of critical national infrastructure, disaster management, supervision of private guard companies, agro-rangers operations, and the Safe Schools Initiative.
On the Safe Schools Initiative, he disclosed plans to deploy intelligence networks around schools and increase patrols to ensure the safety of students across Rivers State.
“Our children must be safe in school. We will intensify surveillance and collaborate with relevant stakeholders to guarantee a secure learning environment,” he said.
Addressing the issue of illegal oil bunkering, the Commandant vowed to intensify the fight against the menace, warning perpetrators to leave the state or face arrest.
“We will not tolerate illegal bunkering in Rivers State. Special operations will be conducted both day and night, and anyone caught will face prosecution,” he warned.
Dr. Reuben expressed gratitude to the Commandant General of the NSCDC, Ahmed Audi, for the opportunity to serve, and acknowledged the support of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Minister of Interior Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, and Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
He assured that the confidence reposed in him would be justified through dedication, loyalty, and hard work.
The new Commandant concluded by calling for cooperation from officers, stakeholders, and residents to collectively ensure a safer Rivers State.
