The African Women Lawyers Association (AWLA), Nigeria Chapter, has vowed to challenge all forms of discrimination against women and the girl-child, particularly the denial of inheritance based on gender.
Chairperson of the 2026 AWLA Parley Planning Committee, Ngozi Enyosiobi-Abafor, made this known at the association’s 10th Parley and Annual General Meeting in Port Harcourt on Monday.
Speaking on the theme, “Women Beyond Limitations,” Enyosiobi-Abafor said there was no law supporting the exclusion of women from inheritance because of their gender.
She cited a recent Supreme Court judgment affirming women’s inheritance rights, stressing that the decision should be respected and enforced at all levels.
“We are not in competition with the menfolk; rather, we are seeking a level playing ground, support and partnership,” she said.
Keynote speakers, including Ginika Tor and Justice S.T. Bello, urged women to focus on their abilities rather than societal limitations, stressing the need for courage, determination and mutual support.
They also called on women to stop antagonising one another, saying unity and collaboration were essential for achieving greater progress in society.
