President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the constitution of the 2027 All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council, with Minister of State for Defence, Dr. Bello Mohammed Matawalle, appointed Deputy Director, Security and Intelligence 1.
The council comprises political leaders, strategists and grassroots mobilisers tasked with coordinating the APC’s engagements ahead of the 2027 general elections.
According to a statement by the Ministry of Defence, Matawalle’s appointment places him at the centre of the campaign’s security and intelligence structure, with responsibility for coordinating security arrangements for campaign activities nationwide.
As Deputy Director, Security and Intelligence 1, Matawalle is expected to oversee the security architecture for campaign activities, including measures to safeguard candidates, campaign officials and supporters.
He will also be responsible for intelligence gathering and risk assessment, working with relevant security agencies to identify potential threats and develop mitigation strategies for campaign operations across the country.
The statement added that Matawalle would coordinate inter-agency and stakeholder engagements, including liaison with traditional rulers, community leaders, youth and women groups, to strengthen the security framework of the campaign.

The Ministry said the appointment reflected Tinubu’s recognition of Matawalle’s record in public service, security management and political mobilisation.
Matawalle, a former governor of Zamfara State, was said to have demonstrated experience in managing complex security challenges and implementing community-based peace initiatives during his tenure.
As Minister of State for Defence, he has also been involved in the implementation of the administration’s security agenda, including strategic engagements with security agencies and initiatives relating to troops’ welfare and infrastructure development.
The statement said his grassroots network, leadership experience and background in executive and national security roles positioned him to handle the sensitive security and intelligence responsibilities of the campaign.
Reacting to the appointment, Matawalle expressed appreciation to President Tinubu and the APC leadership for the confidence reposed in him.
He pledged to deploy his experience as a former governor, serving minister and political leader towards ensuring a peaceful, coordinated and successful campaign.
Matawalle said the campaign would take the achievements of the “Renewed Hope” administration to Nigerians across the country.
Supporters and political stakeholders have since congratulated him on the appointment and pledged their support for his new assignment.
