Nollywood Now Prioritizes Glamour Over Passion – Bimbo Akintola

Bimbo Akintola

Legendary actress, Bimbo Akintola, has stirred conversation about the state of Nollywood, saying the industry that once thrived on hunger and creativity is now being driven by glamour and appearances.

In a recent interview, the screen diva reminisced about her early years in the industry when actors were fueled by raw passion rather than the promise of money or fame. She recalled nights spent rehearsing endlessly, often working on empty stomachs, all in the name of telling authentic stories.

Akintola hailed veterans like Joke Silva and Sola Sobowale as embodiments of that golden era—stars who valued artistry above comfort and laid the foundation for Nollywood’s global recognition.

But according to her, the tide has turned. She lamented that today’s Nollywood appears more invested in image than substance, with many actors preoccupied with designer outfits, flawless makeup, and social media appeal.

“The passion is gone; it’s all about the looks now,” she said bluntly, noting that some even go as far as undergoing body enhancement surgeries to maintain a glamorous persona.

Akintola stressed that while beauty will always fade, true talent and craft remain timeless.

She urged the industry to return to its roots, where talent, discipline, and hard work mattered most, warning that without this reset, Nollywood risks losing the very essence that made it shine.
