Bursaspor head coach Mustafa Er has praised Nigerian striker Kelechi Iheanacho following his historic scoring run in Turkish football, describing the record as one that will be difficult to surpass.
Iheanacho made history on October 15 when he scored twice in Bursaspor’s 3-0 victory over Muğlaspor in the Turkish First League, extending his scoring streak to 10 consecutive league matches. He also provided an assist in the encounter.
The Nigeria international surpassed the previous record of nine consecutive scoring matches achieved by Galatasaray legend Metin Oktay during the 1962–63 season and former Turkish international Saffet Sancaklı with Kocaelispor in the 1995–96 campaign.
Reacting to the milestone, Er acknowledged the difficulty of achieving such consistency and expressed hope that Iheanacho would extend his scoring run.
“This represents an exceptionally challenging record to surpass. Our objective is for him to prolong this sequence even further,” the coach said.
Er also praised the striker’s attitude, highlighting his happiness at the club, positive relationships with teammates and commitment to his work.
“He demonstrates exceptional contentment, maintains excellent interpersonal connections, and demonstrates remarkable dedication to his work,” Er added.
The Bursaspor manager stressed that the achievement should not be credited to Iheanacho alone, noting the contributions of the wider team and the club’s management.
“To evaluate this achievement solely through the lens of Iheanacho would represent an injustice to both the squad and the club. The significance of his teammates’ contributions cannot be disregarded,” he said.
Er also commended the club’s administrators for securing a player with Premier League experience and helping him settle into the team.
Iheanacho was expected to seek an 11th consecutive league appearance with a goal when Bursaspor faced Pendikspor on Monday, October 19, as he looked to extend a run that has placed him among the standout performers in Turkish football.
