In a bid to address emergency healthcare in some of the riverine communities in Bayelsa State, the Bayelsa State Government has disclosed plans to distribute mini ambulances to some of the communities.
This was revealed by the Commissioner for Health, Seiyefa Brisibe when he unveiled a one-day Emergency Response Training organized by the Bayelsa Emergency Medical Services and Ambulance System (BEMSAS) at the Bayelsa Medical University Teaching Hospital in Yenagoa.
Brisibe stated that the distribution of the mini ambulances is meant for riverine communities such as Minibie, Akassa, Sangana, Ukubie, Aghoro among others, in a bid to improve on the emergency healthcare in these communities.

The commissioner also revealed that the distribution of the mini ambulances is part of the healthcare reforms of the administration of Douye Diri, which seeks to reduce the number of people that die due to preventable causes and ensure that everyone has access to quality emergency medical services regardless of their location.
According to the Commissioner, the emergency response training was meant to give health care practitioners and emergency response professionals the required knowledge and skills on how to assess the emergency situation, stabilize patients, provide trauma care and handle ambulances and other medical emergency situations.
He assured the medical professionals and the citizens that the government would work to improve emergency preparedness through capacity building exercises and proper infrastructure for handling emergency medical situations in the state.
The trainees found the exercise timely and useful as they promised to use the knowledge gained to improve the emergency care services in their various health care facilities.
This training which took place at the BEMSAS secretariat of Bayelsa Medical University Teaching Hospital had in attendance among others the following officials of the Ministry of Health; The Permanent Secretary, Dr Jones Stow, Director of Public Health, Dr Ebikapaye Okoyen, Director of Medical Services, Dr Ngowari Torunana, Chief Medical Director of NDUTH and the State BEMSAS Director Dr. Malcolm Brisibe.
