FG Denies Nigeria, ECOWAS Backed Failed Coup in Niger

The Federal Government has dismissed reports alleging that Nigeria and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) supported the recent failed coup attempt in Niger Republic.

The Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Sola Enikanolaiye, described the claims circulating on social media as baseless and irresponsible, accusing those behind them of deliberately misleading the public and attempting to damage Nigeria’s reputation.

In a statement issued on Thursday, Enikanolaiye reaffirmed Nigeria’s firm opposition to military takeovers and all forms of unconstitutional changes of government.

He said Nigeria remained committed to promoting democracy, constitutional governance and stability across West Africa, the Sahel and the African continent.

The minister noted that the Federal Government had already stated its position on the situation in Niger in a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on August 30, 2026.

According to him, Nigeria expressed serious concern over developments in the neighbouring country and called for a peaceful, inclusive and participatory process to restore stability and constitutional order.

Enikanolaiye stressed that Nigeria’s longstanding historical, cultural and fraternal ties with Niger underscored its genuine interest in peace, security, democratic governance and development in the country and the wider Sahel region.

He said, “Nigeria will never support illegality or unconstitutional change of government anywhere, no matter who is involved or which country is concerned.

“While Nigeria is a proud and committed member of ECOWAS, it is unfair, mischievous and entirely false to suggest that Nigeria endorses or condones the military coup.”

The minister urged Nigerians at home and abroad to disregard videos and narratives circulating on social media, saying they were designed to create division, sow discord and mislead the public.

He reiterated Nigeria’s commitment to working with regional partners to promote peace, stability and constitutional governance across the sub-region.
