The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) and the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) are exploring a strategic partnership to drive the digital transformation of Nigeria’s electricity sector and improve smart energy systems.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, 9 June 2026, NITDA said the meeting involved its Director General, Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi, and the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of NISO, Engr. Abdu Bello Muhammed, who paid a courtesy visit to discuss areas of collaboration.
The talks focused on how both institutions can work together to improve electricity transmission and market operations under ongoing reforms in the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI).
Both sides discussed the growing role of digital tools in improving efficiency, transparency, and coordination across the power sector.
They noted the importance of technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT), artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and data analytics in modern electricity management.
NISO, which plays a central role in the electricity value chain, is responsible for ensuring the smooth and reliable operation of the transmission system and electricity market coordination.
The agency said the adoption of digital systems would support real-time monitoring of the grid, improve maintenance planning, and strengthen decision-making across operations.
Speaking during the meeting, NITDA Director General, Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi, said digital technology remains central to improving national infrastructure, especially in the power sector.
He added that NITDA would continue to support efforts to strengthen innovation, build local capacity, and expand the use of digital tools across critical sectors of the economy.
