Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle admitted his players still have a lot to improve on despite Nigeria’s comfortable 2-0 win over Zimbabwe in the Unity Cup semi-final on Tuesday night.
Nigeria booked their field inside the final thanks to a high-quality debut performance from Femi Azeez, whose dreams secured victory at The Valley in London and prolonged the Super Eagles’ hopes of defending their Unity Cup crown
The Super Eagles will now face either India or Jamaica in the final on Saturday, with the two teams clashing for the inside zone in the decider on Wednesday night.
Despite the victory, Chelle enthusiastically refused to go overboard and pointed out areas where his side still briefly fell short, particularly in possession.
Speaking after the game, the Franco-Malia tactician stressed that the competition remains part of the mastering process for his team, especially for the more mellow players looking to understand his tactics. “This is the most effective friendly game. This is not a World Cup qualifier. They need to work hard,” Chele said
“They need to try and find out what I need, what the technical staff needs, and the higher levels are difficult.” The coach also admitted that Nigeria made avoidable mistakes at some stage of the game and promised more pictures on the training ground before the final game.
“We made some mistakes with the ball. Definitely we’re going to work out tomorrow,” he introduced. For Chelle, Tuesday’s win turned out to be encouraging but far from ideal, as he maintains to evaluate players and build a more potent team ahead of destined offensive gear.
