Frosinone Shock Fiorentina 3-0 as La Viola Fall to Bottom

Fiorentina’s nine-match unbeaten run at the Stadio Artemio Franchi came to a stunning end as newly promoted Frosinone secured a shock 3-0 victory in Serie A, leaving La Viola bottom of the table without a goal after two matches.

With Fiorentina celebrating their 100th anniversary, Frosinone threatened to spoil the occasion from the outset. Giorgi Kvernadze fired over early on before Patrizio Masini tested David de Gea, who made a comfortable save.

Fiorentina gradually took control, with Albert Guðmundsson denied brilliantly by Lorenzo Palmisani before seeing a subsequent finish ruled out for offside. New signing Franco Mastantuono also came close with a strike from the edge of the box, but Frosinone stunned the hosts when Antonio Raimondo squeezed Kvernadze’s clever pass inside the near post to open the scoring.

Fiorentina struck the woodwork twice through Mastantuono and fellow summer arrival Víctor Valdepeñas, but Frosinone remained clinical. They doubled their advantage before half-time when Giacomo Calò delivered a dangerous corner, and Gabriele Bracaglia headed down into the net to score his first Serie A goal.

Anthony Oyono nearly made matters even worse for Fiorentina before the interval, forcing another important save from De Gea.

Frosinone created the first opportunity after the restart, with Ilario Monterisi heading over from a corner. That appeared to spark Fiorentina into action as Cher Ndour curled narrowly wide before Mastantuono cut inside and dragged an effort just past the near post.

Despite enjoying more possession and pressure, Fiorentina were caught out again on the counter. Bracaglia turned provider this time, delivering a superb pass for Raimondo, who brought the ball down with his chest before smashing a half-volley into the top corner to complete his brace.

The result leaves Fabio Grosso facing a nightmare start at Fiorentina, with his side losing their opening two Serie A matches without scoring while conceding seven goals. Their difficult situation could be compounded by reports that star striker Moise Kean is set to join Como.

For Frosinone, the result represents a remarkable response to their narrow 1-0 defeat to Juventus on their return to the top flight. They have now extended their unbeaten away run in Serie A to six matches, dating back to their previous spell in the division, with two wins and four draws.
