Anthony Elanga scored the opener as Newcastle United secured a 2-0 Premier League victory over Tottenham Hotspur, leaving Spurs without a point or a goal after their opening two matches. The result also marked Newcastle’s 14th away win against Tottenham, more than they have recorded against any other opponent.
Elanga had made an immediate impact against Liverpool last week and again looked dangerous from the outset, sending a looping cross towards the far post that forced Antonín Kinský to remain alert. Tottenham responded through Mathys Tel, who cut inside before testing Lukáš Horníček with a decent effort.
The hosts soon applied sustained pressure, with Lewis Hall producing a superb last-ditch block to deny Pedro Porro. The Tottenham full-back remained a threat and later sent a volley narrowly over the bar after a corner broke his way on the edge of the area.
Newcastle also looked dangerous from set pieces, with Omar Marmoush wasting a promising opportunity after being picked out by Andrew Robertson’s dangerous delivery. Jan Paul van Hecke then tested Horníček from another corner, but neither side could find the breakthrough before half-time.
Tottenham continued to push after the restart, with Malick Thiaw fortunate to escape punishment after a rash challenge on Marmoush inside the area. Rodrigo Bentancur almost capitalised on the loose ball, while Hall again went close for Newcastle with a long-range effort.

Elanga then had a golden opportunity to open the scoring after rounding Kinský, but his momentum carried him too close to the byline to finish into an empty net. Marmoush also came close on his debut, firing narrowly wide after a powerful run.
Newcastle eventually found the breakthrough through another debutant, Nico González, whose excellent cross-field pass released Amar Dedić. The defender then found Elanga, who showed superb composure to turn away from former teammate Sandro Tonali before curling his effort in off the post.
Tottenham tried to respond, but Horníček denied another long-range attempt from Porro. Newcastle then put the result beyond doubt when Yoane Wissa produced an acrobatic finish from yet another corner.
Marmoush missed a late chance to add a third, but the result was already secure. The defeat condemned Tottenham to a seventh loss in their last nine Premier League meetings with Newcastle and marked the first time in 15 years that Spurs had lost both of their opening league fixtures.
With Tottenham having finished 17th in each of the previous two Premier League seasons, their goalless start to the new campaign will raise further concerns for Roberto De Zerbi and his side.
