Director-General of the National Sports Commission, Bukola Olopade, has expressed strong confidence that the 2026 National Sports Festival will raise the standard for sporting events in Nigeria.
Speaking ahead of the competition, Olopade revealed that preparations for the festival, tagged Enugu 2026, are already in full swing, with a clear focus on delivering a world-class event in Enugu.
He noted that the upcoming edition will be historic, marking the first time the Coal City will host the multi-sport festival.
According to him, the planning process has been intentional and detailed, covering key areas such as infrastructure, logistics, accommodation, security, and media operations.
Olopade also announced the formation of the Main Organising Committee, which he chairs, describing it as a critical step toward ensuring a seamless and successful event.
The committee is expected to drive coordination and execution as the festival draws closer.
“The National Sports Festival remains a vital platform for talent discovery, youth engagement, and national unity,” Olopade said.
“We are committed to working closely with the Enugu State Government and all stakeholders to ensure that Enugu 2026 sets a new benchmark in organisation and excellence.”
He emphasized that early planning reflects the commission’s determination to avoid past shortcomings and deliver a competition that meets international standards.
Efforts by the Enugu State Government to upgrade facilities and put necessary structures in place have also been acknowledged as a positive sign of readiness.
With momentum building and preparations gaining clarity, expectations are high that the 2026 National Sports Festival will not only showcase Nigeria’s sporting talents but also redefine how major sporting events are organised in the country.
