The Chairman of Okrika Local Government Area, Akuro Tobin, has initiated the bidding process for two major education projects aimed at improving learning infrastructure in the area. In a statement released on Friday evening, the council noted that the move reflected the administration’s continued focus on strengthening the education sector across the LGA.
The proposed projects include the construction of a twin-storey lodge for corps members, as well as a six-classroom block at Community Secondary School in Okochiri. Speaking during the bid opening ceremony held at the banquet hall of the Chairman’s Office, Tobin explained that the projects were designed to address critical gaps in educational facilities.
He emphasised that improving the standard of education remained a central priority for his administration.The exercise began with the introduction of representatives from participating firms, followed by the documentation of attendance by all stakeholders. A sealed and tamper-proof bid box was presented before officials proceeded to open and review submissions, covering both technical and financial proposals.

The process was overseen by the council’s Director of Procurement, Esther Okpaku, in line with established procurement guidelines. Officials from the Rivers State Bureau of Public Procurement monitored the exercise to ensure strict adherence to the Public Procurement Act.
Observers noted that the entire procedure was conducted transparently, underscoring the council’s commitment to accountability and due process. Also present at the event was Mr Amah Roberts, Treasurer of the Nigerian Union of Teachers, Rivers State chapter, who described the development as a positive step.
He remarked that it marked the first time the union had been actively involved in education-related processes within the Okrika council. Roberts further commended the chairman for his efforts in advancing the education sector in the area.
The event drew a wide range of attendees, including community leaders, legislative council members, party officials, senior council staff, representatives of the teachers’ union, and other stakeholders.
