In a bid to fight cultism, insecurity and other criminal activities, Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, has taken the campaign against cultism and Social vices to primary and secondary schools in Rivers state.

Speaking at model primary school Igwuruta in Ikwerre local government area, the Inspector General of Police said the campaign is targeted to catch the young ones early by educating them on the dangers and consequences of cultism and criminal activities.

The IGP who was represented by the Commander of Anti-cultism Elele, Yusuf Idi, explained that the latest investigation conducted shows that seventy percent of youths involved in cultism were initiated at their early age of primary and secondary education.

“I want you all to know that six-five to seventy per cent of secondary school students are in one way or another affiliated with a cult group either called Degbam, Dewell, Iceland amongst others. Read your books, pass your exams, so you can be admitted into the University to become good citizens of the country.

“If you decide to join these bad groups, you are going nowhere in life, you either end up becoming a criminal and police will come after you, you end up in prison or you engage in a gun battle and security personnel who will shoot you to death.

“Know you are leaders of tomorrow, there are children of your age who are breaking positive records, some are making discoveries and government is giving them all necessary support. I want you to start thinking in positive direction, acquire a skill that will help you in future”

He urged the students to always report to their parent, guardians on any form of initiation process that wants to be carried out on them or any friend who wants to lure them into a secret group.

“If anybody even your school mates tries to engage you in any secret group, report that person, don’t keep quiet. If you are afraid that they will kill you, come to the police and report to us, we will protect you and they can not kill you because we have been dealing with them”

On his part, Supervisory Director of Universal Basic Education in Ikwerre Local Government, ADOLPHUS UMESI, commended the organizers of the programme and promised to ensure that the campaign gets to all the schools in the state while admonishing the students to shun cultism as it is a death warrant.

“This campaign will not just end here, I will take it up from school to school, if you want to be successful, you must leave anything that will lead you into negativity, belonging to cultism is death”
