Clinton Ezekiel Begins Rivers United Career With Clean-Sheet Debut

Young Nigerian goalkeeper Clinton Ezekiel has made an impressive start to life at Rivers United, marking his competitive debut with a clean sheet as the Port Harcourt club defeated Plateau United 2–0 on Matchday One of the EuroMatch NPFL season.

‎Ezekiel, who has progressed from Nigeria’s U20 setup to senior domestic football, was handed the responsibility between the posts as Rivers United opened their campaign at home. The goalkeeper responded with a composed display, helping the Pride of Rivers secure all three points without conceding.

‎Rivers United established control early in the encounter, with Abdulrasheed Shehu Dabai opening the scoring before Wasiu Falolu added a second goal in the 38th minute. The two-goal advantage gave the home side a comfortable cushion heading into the interval.

‎The Port Harcourt-based outfit maintained its discipline after the break, managing the game effectively and protecting its lead until the final whistle.

‎For Ezekiel, the clean sheet represents an important milestone at the beginning of his Rivers United career. The 20-year-old goalkeeper joined the club from Bayelsa United ahead of the 2026/27 season, following his development at the youth international level. He is also listed as a Nigeria U20 international.

‎His impressive domestic debut could now be followed by an opportunity on the continental stage.

‎Rivers United have travelled to Côte d’Ivoire for their CAF Champions League preliminary-round assignment against FC San Pedro. Should Ezekiel be selected, he would have the chance to make his continental debut and add another significant achievement to his rapidly developing career.

‎The goalkeeper’s journey highlights the pathway available to young Nigerian players: progress through the national youth teams, establish themselves in the NPFL and eventually compete in African club football.

‎With a debut, a clean sheet, and three points already secured, Ezekiel has made a promising first impression at Rivers United. The next challenge will be to maintain that form as the club balances its domestic ambitions with its CAF Champions League campaign.
