The Rivers State Police Command has commenced an investigation into an alleged shooting involving a police officer, following the circulation of a video of the incident on social media.
The command, in a statement issued on Friday, August 28, 2026, said its attention was drawn to a viral video showing an alleged shooting involving a police officer and a motorist.
According to preliminary information released by the command, the incident occurred on August 27, 2026, following an altercation between a police officer identified as Corporal Alfred Louis and a man identified as Anthony Obodo.
The police said the altercation reportedly escalated into a scuffle, during which a gun was discharged, resulting in the death of Obodo. Two other passers-by were also reportedly injured in the incident.
The command said that following the shooting, an angry mob attacked and assaulted the alleged officer, leaving him with multiple injuries.

The officer and other members of his team have since been taken to the State Criminal Investigation Department (State CID) as investigations continue.
The police said the officers would face appropriate disciplinary measures in accordance with the law, subject to the outcome of the investigation.
The command condemned the alleged conduct of the officer, describing it as unacceptable and inconsistent with professional policing standards.
“The action is totally condemnable and does not reflect professionalism in policing,” the command said, adding that it would not relent in taking strict disciplinary action against any officer found to have acted unlawfully.
The command further stated that it would not shield any police officer involved in unethical conduct capable of bringing the Nigeria Police Force into disrepute.
The police urged members of the public with relevant information about the incident to come forward as investigations continue.
