In response to recent mobilizations for nationwide protests, the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) underscores that the right to protest is solely a right to peaceful assembly and to avoid violent protests that will lead to the destruction of lives and properties.
The NPF spokesperson, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, stated in a statement disclosed to newsmen on Tuesday via their social media channel that the commission was dedicated to protecting the rights of all citizens, including those participating in peaceful protests.
However, stating, that the NPF is committed to safeguarding the rights of peaceful protesters, the NPF will not permit the violation of others’ rights in the name of mass protests.
Although citizens planning peaceful protests are encouraged to notify the police and request protection, those who engage in violence will face the full consequences of the law.
Furthermore, the commission reminded the public to avoid tampering with the national grid or disrupting electricity transmission, which is a criminal offense.
Added to that, disruption of critical infrastructure such as airports, hospitals, or essential services, as well as violent picketing, is “equally unacceptable.”
The police force underscored their commitment to maintaining law and order and ensuring the safety and security of all citizens and highlighted the implications of their plans, which were described as economic sabotage or jeopardizing national security and public safety.

Reacting to this to avoid a breakdown of laws and order in society during the protest, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has instructed all Zonal Assistant Inspectors General of Police and State Command Commissioners of Police, in collaboration with other sister agencies, to ensure a conducive environment and atmosphere.
He further encourages parents and guardians to warn their wards against participating in violent protests.
He said, “We remain dedicated to upholding the rights of citizens while ensuring that public order is maintained.”
