Bayer Leverkusen manager Carles Martínez has praised Nigerian striker Victor Boniface following his brief appearance in the club’s 5–2 victory over 1. FC Nürnberg in the second round of the DFB-Pokal.
Boniface came on for Jonas Hofmann in the 87th minute at the BayArena as Leverkusen recovered from a two-goal deficit to secure a convincing victory on Wednesday night.
The Nigerian forward has struggled for regular playing time this season, but his late introduction gave him another opportunity to feature for the German club.
Speaking after the match, Martínez acknowledged Boniface’s desire to play a more significant role in the team and expressed satisfaction with his contribution during the closing stages.
“I’m happy for him because I know he wanted to play and be important. He was good in those few minutes,” Martínez said.
Boniface’s appearance against Nürnberg was another step in his efforts to secure more playing time as he seeks to establish himself in Leverkusen’s plans for the remainder of the season.
The 25-year-old will hope to build on the opportunity and convince the coaching staff that he can contribute more regularly to the team’s attacking efforts.
Leverkusen’s victory came after Nürnberg had taken a 2–0 lead through Rafael Lubach and Sigurd Haugen. Edmond Tapsoba scored twice to bring the hosts level before Patrik Schick, Hofmann and Lucas Vázquez completed the comeback.
Boniface will now look to turn his limited opportunities into more substantial involvement as Leverkusen continue their campaign across domestic competitions.
