Lawyers attack Buhari’s critics in Port Harcourt

Brave Dickson

Legal practitioners under the auspices of Progressive Lawyers Forum, Rivers State Chapter has lambasted critics of President Muhammadu Buhari over the controversial Executive Order 6.

Recall that shortly after President Buhari invoked the Executive Order 6 to seize assets belonging to suspected treasury looters and the banning of 50 prominent Nigerians from travelling overseas, the presidency came under heavy criticisms.

While some lawyers are of the opinion that the Order contravenes the constitutional rights to free movement, others believe that the Order is inimical to the nation’s economy.

But the Progressive Lawyers Forum through its state Chairman, Barr. Eugene Odey hailed the president, describing the Order as timely, aimed at upholding national interest.

“Those criticizing the Order do not mean well for this country. The president in his wisdom invoked the Order to address urgent issues of national interest.

“I hear people saying that the Order negates the principles of separation of powers. I do not see where it will undermine power separation among the organs of government.
I think some Nigerians are not comfortable with any administrative instrument that can effectively tackle corruption such as the Executive Order 6” Odey said.

Though Nigerians are earnestly waiting for the court to decide on the validity of the Order currently being challenged, several people have said that the order is another exhibition of tactlessness from the presidency.
