Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, has expressed satisfaction with the progress of work on the Creek Road Market in Port Harcourt, assuring that the 700-shop facility will be completed by January 2027.
Fubara gave the assurance on Friday during an inspection of the project, describing the market as a strategic intervention aimed at relocating street traders, easing traffic congestion and restoring environmental order in the Old Port Harcourt Township.
The first phase of the market comprises about 700 stalls and shops, with designated sections for wet and dry goods to accommodate traders currently operating along Creek Road and adjoining streets.
The governor explained that relocating the traders to the new facility would enable SETRACO, the contractor handling road rehabilitation in the old township, to complete the resurfacing of Creek Road, which has been hindered by street trading.
He commended the contractor for the quality of work delivered so far and assured that the state government would address funding concerns to facilitate the timely completion of the project.
According to him, the market is expected to provide a more organised trading environment, improve sanitation, reduce environmental and health risks, and restore the Old Port Harcourt Township to its former status as a clean and orderly urban centre.
Fubara reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to delivering projects that promote the health and well-being of residents while supporting commercial activities and economic growth across the state.
