Cristiano Ronaldo’s 2008 Ballon d’Or-winning season is reportedly leading a special fan poll organised to determine the greatest winning season in the history of the prestigious football award.
The competition, titled Ballon d’Or Of All Time, was launched in October and invites fans to select the most outstanding season among players who have won the award at least twice.
According to the figures cited in the report, Ronaldo’s 2008 triumph is leading with 62 per cent of the votes.
The Portuguese forward won his first Ballon d’Or in 2008 while playing for Manchester United, following an outstanding campaign in which he helped the club win the Premier League and UEFA Champions League.
The poll features football legends including Lionel Messi, Ronaldo Nazário, Marco van Basten, Michel Platini, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, Kevin Keegan, Franz Beckenbauer, Johan Cruyff and Alfredo Di Stéfano, alongside Ronaldo.
Rather than asking fans to select the greatest player outright, the initiative allows them to vote for a specific Ballon d’Or-winning year, making each player’s individual triumph eligible for consideration.
The voting process requires a €1 contribution for each vote, with participants permitted to vote multiple times. The official Ballon d’Or website states that voting closes at 11:59 p.m. Paris time on October 27, 2026, while the results are scheduled to be announced on October 28.
Ronaldo’s 2008 season remains a landmark moment in his career, marking the beginning of his collection of five Ballon d’Or awards.
The poll offers fans an opportunity to revisit some of the most celebrated individual campaigns in football history, although its eventual outcome will reflect the preferences of participating voters rather than a definitive measure of the greatest season.
