Super Eagles head coach Éric Chelle has reflected on Nigeria’s disappointing 3-0 defeat to Guinea-Bissau in a 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier.
The loss came three days after the Super Eagles opened their campaign with a 2-1 comeback victory over Madagascar in Uyo.
Nigeria struggled throughout Tuesday’s encounter in Bissau and were second best for long periods.
Franculino Djú gave the hosts the lead in the first half after a fine individual effort.
Guinea-Bissau strengthened their grip on the match after the break when Mama Baldé doubled the advantage.
Álvaro Djaló then added a third goal in stoppage time to complete a dominant display by the Djurtus.
Speaking after the match, Chelle admitted that Guinea-Bissau deserved the victory.
According to the Malian tactician, the hosts showed greater intensity and aggression from the opening whistle.
“They were more aggressive than us; they were better than us,” Chelle told reporters after the game.
The Super Eagles coach also pointed to the playing conditions as one of the factors that affected his team’s performance.
“Though this is not an excuse, they know their pitch. They usually play on this pitch, but for us, it was the first time, and the pitch was very bad. The weather was very hot too,” he said.
“So, Guinea-Bissau entered the game more motivated and more aggressive. They put more intensity, and we never found a solution.
“We tried to go forward after halftime, to bring something new, but after 10 minutes, we stopped, and I don’t know why.”
The defeat leaves Nigeria second in Group L with three points from two matches.
Guinea-Bissau now lead the standings with six points after winning their opening two fixtures.
The Super Eagles will hope to respond positively in their next qualifier as they continue their quest for a place at the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.
