WhatsApp is dropping its native Windows app in favor of an uglier web version

Meta has decided to phase out its native WhatsApp application for Windows, choosing instead to implement a web wrapper version, mere months following the introduction of a native iPad application.

The latest beta version of WhatsApp for Windows features significant updates, with Meta stating that it has “refined the appearance and functionality of WhatsApp beta.”

This change marks a considerable transition for WhatsApp on Windows, shifting from a native Windows and WinUI application to a web-based version encapsulated within a web view.

As a result, the application not only showcases a different interface, but the notification system has also been modified, and the settings user interface is notably more straightforward. The beta version additionally introduces WhatsApp Channels and improved functionalities for Status and Communities features.

In the most recent WhatsApp beta, Meta is employing Microsoft’s Edge WebView2 technology, which allows for the easy packaging of its web version of WhatsApp into a desktop application.

Windows Latest emphasizes that this method streamlines Meta’s management of a unified code base, removing the necessity to maintain a separate native Windows application.

For regular WhatsApp users on Windows, this alteration is disheartening, especially as it suggests that the web application will no longer integrate smoothly with Windows 11 and will utilize more RAM compared to the native version. Ironically, WhatsApp has claimed that the native versions of its applications for Windows and Mac “provide enhanced performance and reliability, additional collaboration options, and features aimed at increasing productivity.”

WhatsApp was first launched as a native application on Windows just a few years ago, enabling users to utilize the app without the need for direct synchronization with their mobile devices.
