Josh2Funny Defends Peller Amid ‘Olodo Uprising’ Debate

Nigerian comedian and skit maker Josh Alfred, popularly known as Josh2Funny, has defended a new wave of content creators facing criticism over what some have described as “brain-rot” content and low educational standards.

The debate gained attention after rapper YCee described the trend as the “Olodo Uprising.”

Speaking during an interview with media personality Nedu Wazobia, Josh2Funny said the movement had both positive and negative sides, while arguing that comedy should not necessarily be judged by academic standards.

According to him, he was also once labelled part of the “Olodo Uprising” because of his popular Mama Felicia character.

“When I started, it was easy for people to call me part of the Olodo Uprising. My character, ‘Mama Felicia’, didn’t make any sense. It wasn’t well-articulated comedy. I was just fooling around,” he said.

Josh2Funny argued that dismissing such content as unintelligent ignored the entertainment value and economic impact of comedy.

“Comedy has never been something that is supposed to be intelligent. The so-called elite might call it ‘stupid’, but it built a million-dollar industry called Nollywood,” he stated.

The comedian also attributed the growing popularity of such creators to social media, noting that digital platforms had given personalities with unconventional styles unprecedented visibility.

Using popular streamer Peller as an example, Josh2Funny said social media had played a major role in making him widely known.

“It’s just that social media has now exaggerated it. The person in question, Peller, you see him all the time. If it were when there was no social media, nobody would know what he does,” he said.

He added that Peller’s lack of formal education should not be used as a reason to ridicule him, especially given his success as a content creator.

“Some people are envious of him for being blessed without a degree or quality education,” he said.

Josh2Funny further questioned what critics expected creators such as Peller to do with their lives.

“But what would you have him do? Should he become a thief because he doesn’t know how to speak good English?” he asked.

He maintained that while social media personalities can be criticised, their success should also be acknowledged as evidence of how the digital economy has created new opportunities for Nigerians.
