Arsenal have opened exploratory talks over a potential move for Bayer Leverkusen defender Jarell Quansah as they continue to strengthen their defence ahead of the new Premier League season.
The Gunners have expressed interest in the 23-year-old England international, although discussions remain at an early stage. Sources indicate that a deal could be possible.
Arsenal’s interest in Quansah comes as the club continues negotiations with Aston Villa over defender Ezri Konsa. Villa are reportedly seeking around £60 million for the 28-year-old, while Arsenal value him closer to £40 million.
Quansah could appeal to Arsenal because of his versatility, with the former Liverpool defender capable of playing both centre-back and right-back. However, it remains unclear whether the move is a genuine alternative to Konsa or part of Arsenal’s wider negotiations for the Villa defender.

The need for defensive reinforcements has increased following William Saliba’s injury, which is expected to keep the France international out for an extended period. Jurrien Timber is also facing a fitness concern after missing two months towards the end of last season with an ankle injury.
Liverpool, who sold Quansah to Leverkusen last year, have the option to match any offer for the defender under the terms of the transfer agreement. However, the Premier League club is understood to have no plans to activate the clause.
Quansah made 44 appearances for Leverkusen last season and scored five goals. He was also part of England’s World Cup squad this summer, starting three matches at right-back before being sent off against Mexico in the last 16.
The defender subsequently missed England’s quarter-final victory over Norway and their semi-final defeat by Argentina.
