A first-year student of the Ignatius Ajuru University of Education (IAUE), Rumuolumeni, Rivers State, has reportedly been shot by suspected gang members on the university campus.
The incident occurred on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, barely two days after a reported clash between two rival gang groups at the institution.
A viral video circulating online shows the injured student lying on a hospital bed, while another scene captures his coursemates carrying him on the university campus.
A source close to the victim told our correspondent that he was rushed to a hospital, where doctors were reportedly working to remove bullet pellets lodged in his body.
The source further claimed that the student’s friends had to contribute money towards the cost of his surgery.
However, it could not be independently confirmed whether the victim was affiliated with any cult group.
The Rivers State Police Command is yet to provide an official statement on the incident, with the command saying it would respond to enquiries.
IAUE Suspends SUG Week Activities
Following the incident, the management of Ignatius Ajuru University of Education has suspended all remaining activities scheduled for the Students’ Union Government (SUG) Week with immediate effect.
The decision followed the emergence of a viral video showing students running in different directions on campus amid the sound of gunshots.
In a statement signed by the university Registrar, Dr Chinonye Abraham Ajie, students were directed to return to their classrooms on Thursday, August 13, for normal academic activities.
The management warned that students who fail to attend lectures would be held responsible for their actions.
It also urged students to stay away from activities capable of disrupting academic activities or threatening peace and order within the university.
The development has heightened concerns over security on the institution’s campus, coming just days after the reported clash between rival groups.
