A Rivers State High Court sitting in Port Harcourt has adjourned proceedings in the case involving the death of two-year-old Winnie Akekue, a pupil of Wisdom Gate School, until May 26, 2026.
The case involves the proprietor of the school and four management staff members attached to the school’s Eligbolo campus, who are facing allegations of negligence linked to the child’s death.
During Tuesday’s proceedings, counsel to the defendants informed the court that the Rivers State Ministry of Justice had not yet served his clients with the necessary court documents required for the case.
He subsequently appealed for an adjournment to allow proper service of the processes.

Following the application, the trial judge, Justice Monima Danagogo, directed the prosecution to ensure all relevant documents are served on the defence before the next hearing date.
The court also ruled that the administrative bail earlier granted to the defendants by the Nigeria Police Force should remain valid pending further proceedings.
In addition, Justice Danagogo ordered that the surety representing the accused persons must continue to appear in court until the plea process is concluded.
The late Winnie Akekue reportedly died in March after a shelf allegedly collapsed on her at the school’s Eligbolo campus in Port Harcourt.
The Rivers State Government had earlier ordered the temporary closure of the school pending the outcome of investigations into the incident.
