General Birame Diop Assumes Office as ECOWAS Commission President

The new President of the ECOWAS Commission, General Birame Diop, has officially assumed office, succeeding Dr. Omar Alieu Touray of The Gambia.

Diop, a former Senegalese Minister of Defence and former Chief of the General Staff of the Senegalese Armed Forces, was appointed by the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government at its 69th Ordinary Summit in Sierra Leone.

His assumption of office marks the end of Touray’s four-year tenure as President of the ECOWAS Commission.

The new ECOWAS Commission President has pledged to provide strategic leadership as the regional bloc works to strengthen regional integration, peace and security, economic cooperation and institutional effectiveness.

Reports also indicate that Nigeria’s Anthony Ogunjimi will serve as Vice President of the ECOWAS Commission, while all Commissioners have also been replaced.
