Rivers State Ministry of Education to Partner NSCDC on Safe School Initiative

Rivers State Ministry of Education is set to partner with the Nigerian Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC) on Safe School initiatives and security tips on self defense strategies.

Speaking at a meeting on Friday October 3 with the commander of the Special Female Strike Force of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defense Corps, Rivers State command, Superintendent Francisca Arukwe, the Permanent Secretary Ministry of Education Dr. Ndidi Chikanele Utchay commended the initiative of the Federal Government in establishing such special unit to help provide safe environment for learning in schools adding that safety and security are essential keys for growth and development in schools.

While pledging the Ministry of Education’s readiness to collaborate the NSCDC’s mission, Dr. Utchay approved their proposal to visit schools for the purpose of sensitization against violence, bullying and other vices noting that the Ministry will assist them in areas that falls within her purview.

In her remarks, the commander of the Special Female Strike Force of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defense Corps, Rivers State command, Superintendent Francisca Arukwe said they are implementing the mandate of the Federal Government which set up monitoring units in States made up of women alone to monitor schools and make sure that the schools are safe while learning is taking place.

She said areas of sensitization includes bullying, teachings on Security tips and Self defense such that students can defend themselves in the event of sudden attacks within the school environment.

She further stated that they intend to enter rural communities in the Local Government Areas to sensitize women and youths on safety tips and thanked the Permanent Secretary for accepting to collaborate with them in no small measure.
