Talented Boxer Wants World Fight To Hold In Nigeria

Ajagba

Efe Ajagba, the WBC Silver Heavyweight Champion, carries the weight of his journey with quiet pride. Known as the “Silent Roller,” a moniker he adopted to reflect his reserved nature and relentless work ethic, Ajagba’s story is one of resilience, faith, and an unbreakable connection to his Nigerian roots. In a recent interview with the popular daily, The Punch, the towering boxer opened up about his rise, his struggles, and his dream of bringing a world title fight to his homeland.

Growing up in Nigeria, Ajagba faced challenges that shaped his grit and determination. “I was going through a lot in Nigeria,” he shared, reflecting on a pivotal moment early in his career. In his eagerness to escape hardship and chase his dreams abroad, he signed a restrictive contract as an inexperienced boxer. It was a decision that could have derailed his path, but with the support of his wife, he found the courage to break free and forge a better future. “The country is hard,” he acknowledged, offering advice to young boxers tempted by quick opportunities. “Delay can’t stop you if you have that passion inside you.”

Ajagba’s journey from Nigeria to international boxing stardom is a testament to that passion. “I know where I came from, I know how I got to where I am now, and I never forgot my home,” he said. His gratitude to God anchors his story, as he credits divine guidance for his success and the honour of returning to Nigeria with a WBC Silver belt. For Ajagba, home is more than a place—it’s the heartbeat of his ambition. “Home is always home, and there is no place like this,” he said with conviction.

The “Silent Roller” nickname suits him perfectly. “I used to call myself ‘One and Only,’ but then I thought, everyone can be the one and only,” he explained. “After a while, I settled on ‘Silent Roller,’ because I don’t talk too much. I just come in, do my job, and roll on.” That quiet focus has made him a formidable presence in the ring, where his reach and power have earned him a reputation, particularly for his devastating right hand. Yet, unlike some of his idols like Mike Tyson, Ajagba’s style is distinct. “Tyson is a beast,” he said, noting the difference in their approaches. “He promises knockouts and gets in close. For me, I have the reach, so you should come to me.”

Ajagba believes African fighters, particularly Nigerians, have a unique edge. “We have strength and power,” he said, emphasising the natural athleticism and mental toughness born from the hustle of life in Nigeria. His advice to aspiring African boxers is clear: harness that raw power with refined technique. “That’s what gives us our edge,” he said. “That mental strength makes us stand out.”

As he looks to the future, Ajagba’s ultimate dream is to bring a world title fight to Nigeria. “If I have the choice, I will bring it here,” he declared. “I have to hold a title belt to make those decisions, and if I want to defend it, I will always want it here.” For Ajagba, fighting in Nigeria isn’t just about personal glory—it’s about inspiring a nation and showcasing African boxing on the global stage. “I want to fight in Africa, most especially Nigeria,” he said, his voice carrying the weight of a promise.

Efe Ajagba’s story is far from over. The Silent Roller continues to move forward, driven by faith, resilience, and an unshakable love for his homeland. As he eyes a world title, Nigeria waits for the day its champion brings the fight home, ready to cheer him on in the ring he’s always called his own.
