WAEC Dismisses Rumors of 2025 WASSCE Exam Cancellation

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC), Nigeria, has dismissed as false and misleading the circulated claim that the English Language paper in the ongoing 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for School Candidates has been cancelled.

Information gathered was that the English Language paper was written at night in certain parts of the country—an act which Amos Dangut, Head of the National Office of WAEC, stated did not conform to the council’s standards.

In a statement signed by Moyosola Adesina, Acting Head of Public Affairs, the council clarified that the viral press release dated 30 May 2025 and shared across social media was fabricated by mischief-makers. WAEC confirmed that only the irregular examination was canceled.

“The management of the West African Examinations Council would like to state that the press release being circulated did not emanate from the council. The council is certain that the false claim is being peddled by mischief-makers who are bent on bringing the council to disrepute, to cause confusion and panic for candidates who sat the examination.

“All pieces of information from the council are disseminated via our official and verified social media handles, as well as accredited media platforms across the country. In the same vein, all press releases are issued and signed by the Public Affairs Department of the Council on behalf of the Head of National Office,” the statement partly read.

Furthermore, the council urged the general public, including candidates, parents, and schools, to disregard unverified information and rely solely on official communications. The council reassured stakeholders of its commitment and expressed gratitude to the public for their continued trust over the past 73 years.

It added that it remains dedicated to enhancing its services and pledged to continually explore innovative approaches to deliver quality service to the Nigerian child.
