Rivers State Government Bans All Public Protests

Florence Uwaeme

The Rivers state government has put an end to all public protests in the state. The ban comes in the wake of mass protests against and for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the Nigerian Army (NA).

The government in a statement stated yesterday through the Rivers state commissioner for Information and communication, Emma Okah called on all security agencies to ensure that the ban is effective.

This he said is for the interest of public peace, safety and orderliness.

The commissioner urged residents of Rivers state to comply with the directive as anyone found blameworthy will be dealt with.

Some residents of Rivers state have expressed worry over the indefinite ban, stating that this may lead the state to anarchy. They argued that the ban is an outright infringement on the fundamental human right of freedom of movement and speech.

Other residents commended the decision citing the many chaoses these public protests have caused the state.
