Nigeria’s Flamingos forward Oluwakemi Adegbuyi has expressed her delight after helping the team secure a 2-0 victory over Puerto Rico at the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.
The Flamingos bounced back from their opening-day defeat to Poland with the crucial win over tournament debutants Puerto Rico in Rabat on Tuesday.
Adegbuyi, who was named Player of the Match, opened the scoring in the 25th minute to give Nigeria the advantage.
Despite Puerto Rico’s determined efforts, Nigeria maintained their lead before Precious Oscar sealed the victory with a second goal deep into stoppage time.
The result kept Nigeria in contention for a place in the Round of 16, with the team sitting third in Group B ahead of their final group-stage fixture against defending champions DPR Korea.
Speaking after the match, Adegbuyi acknowledged the challenge posed by Puerto Rico but praised her teammates for their determination to secure all three points.
“The game was not easy for us, but we tried our best and we were able to get the three points today,” she said.
The forward also described her goal as a significant milestone, expressing excitement at scoring on the global stage for the first time.
“I’m very happy and very excited because this is my first goal in these tournaments, on the biggest stage,” she told FIFA.
Adegbuyi added that she was determined to make her family and Nigeria proud as her international career progresses.
“I’m very happy to score here, on the biggest stage of my life, because this is just the beginning. I promise to make my family and the whole nation proud,” she said.
The Flamingos will now face DPR Korea on Friday in a decisive Group B encounter as they seek to secure qualification for the knockout stage.
