Soldiers barricade INEC office in Abua/Odual, prevent distribution of electoral materials

Soldiers have invaded the office of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, in Abua/Odual Local Government Area of Rivers state, preventing officials of the commission from distributing voting materials.

Theportcitynews gathered that the invasion by soldiers to the commission’s office led to protests by the Peoples Democratic Party’s chieftains who accused the army of working with All Progressives Congress, APC.

An eyewitness who spoke to our correspondent on the conditions of anonymity said the soldiers also ordered Youth Corps members and other INEC’s adhoc staff out of the premises.

He said the soldiers fired several rounds of ammunition in the air, causing panic and uncertainty over the conduct of the election in the LGA.

The hotly contested election is between the incumbent governor, Nyesom Wike of the PDP and Awara Biokpomabo of African Action Congress, AAC.

Although the APC has no candidates for the elections following series of court judgements which barred the party from fielding candidates, a faction of the party adopted the candidate of the AAC for the gubernatorial post.
