Super Eagles defender Calvin Bassey has described captaining Fulham as an “unbelievable privilege” while expressing his appreciation for the trust placed in him by new manager Álvaro Arbeloa.
Bassey has worn the captain’s armband in Fulham’s opening three Premier League matches of the season, although the London club is still searching for its first victory.
The 26-year-old defender said he was honoured to lead the team under Arbeloa, who joined Fulham from Real Madrid during the summer.
“It’s a privilege. Being able to captain this club is unbelievable,” Bassey said.
The Nigerian international added that his position at the heart of Fulham’s defence naturally demands leadership, communication and responsibility on the pitch.

Bassey also urged patience as the squad continues to adapt to Arbeloa’s approach, stressing that the team has already shown encouraging signs despite its winless start to the campaign.
“It’s a journey. We’ve only been with him for two months or so, so it’s very new,” he said.
“He understands that it’s different to what we’re used to, so it’s going to take time to adjust.”
Meanwhile, Bassey is reportedly close to agreeing to a new long-term contract with Fulham, with several top European clubs said to be monitoring his situation.
The Nigerian joined Fulham in July 2023 on a four-year contract and has since made 105 appearances for the club, scoring four goals and providing one assist.
Fulham are keen to secure the future of the defender, who has established himself as an important member of the squad, amid growing interest in his services.
