2027: INEC Releases Candidate Lists for National Assembly Elections

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has released the final lists of candidates contesting for the 2027 National Assembly Elections.

The list reveals that there will be 4,408 candidates contesting for positions in the Senate and House of Representatives, where 1,195 of them will contest for positions in the Senate while 3,213 will contest for seats in the House of Representatives.

This comes after INEC’s endeavors to have all things sorted out for the 2027 general elections. According to the schedule set by INEC, the Nigerian elections will take place on Saturday, 16 January 2027, for the presidential and National Assembly Elections, and Saturday, 6 February 2027, for governorship and State House of Assembly Elections.

From the above statistics, it can be easily seen that there is a great difference in terms of numbers of males and females who will contest the coming elections. As for the males, the total number of them will be 3,965 and for females, the number will be 443.

For the Senatorial seat, 1,080 males will contest against 115 females, while for House of Representatives election, 2,885 males will contest against 328 females.

Amongst all the parties which will take part in the forthcoming elections, the Allied Peoples Movement will field the largest number of female candidates amongst the two legislative chambers. 11 women will be nominated by this party for the Senate while 42 women will be nominated for the House of Representatives.

Previously, The Port City News (TCPN) had reported that INEC had come up with the final list of candidates who were contesting to become the presidents and vice-presidents during the 2027 general elections.

The list was signed by the INEC Secretary Rose Oriaran-Anthony. This list was composed of 18 candidates for the position of presidents and vice-presidents of various political parties.

These include president of Nigeria Bola Tinubu of All Progressives Congress (APC); the former vice-president Atiku Abubakar of African Democratic Congress (ADC); Peter Obi of Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC); Oluseyi Makinde, governor of Oyo State of Allied Peoples Movement (APM); Sandy Ojang Onor of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP); and former governor of Cross River State Donald Duke of Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) and so forth.

These elections will be conducted on a new schedule which is due to the amendment brought by the Electoral Act 2026.

The presidential and National Assembly elections will be conducted on Saturday, 16 January 2027, while governors and State Houses of Assembly members will be elected on 6 February 2027.
