Commissioner for Urban Development and Physical Planning Rivers state, Dr Reason Onya, has said his decision to voluntarily step aside for the panel of enquiry to investigate the collapse of a seven-storey building in Portharcourt was the best thing to do.

Dr Onya who disclosed this while fielding questions from our reporter Tina Amanda said his action is what will guarantee him peace of mind and give room for a thorough investigation to be carried out in the ministry.

The Commissioner further expressed his pains and sadness on the colossal loss that occurred, while extending his sympathy to the affected families.

“My ministry is involved. I feel honourable enough to let go, although it is not common in this part of the world for people to step aside in their administrations, duties or assignment.

“I am determined to ensure that government succeed in all that they are doing. I feel terrible and pained each time I go to the collapsed site and people cry out in agony why me.

“I also sympathize with Governor Nyesom Wike each time I hear him talk on the matter. It is with pains and it pierces my heart.

“Good enough, a panel will be set up for a more thorough investigation to find out what could have caused the heartbreaking incidence at a time like this in Rivers state.

“I’m happy that the state executive council accepted my decision to step aside so that the right will be done”
