The Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) has proposed establishing a NISO–State Technical Working Group to strengthen collaboration with state stakeholders and support the development of an integrated electricity market.
NISO Managing Director and Chief Executive, Bello Mohammed, made the proposal during the National Workshop on the Electricity Act 2023 at the State House Auditorium, Presidential Villa, Abuja.
According to a statement by the organisation, Mohammed also proposed an annual energy planning summit involving NISO and state governments to assess energy resources and forecast electricity demand.

He emphasised the need for harmonised technical standards, data sharing and effective coordination between state electricity markets and the interconnected national grid.
Other recommendations included developing a national state coordination framework, institutionalising integrated energy planning and adopting a phased implementation roadmap.
Mohammed explained that the proposals were not intended to centralise electricity markets but to ensure effective coordination within a reliable and well-managed electricity system, in line with the Electricity Act 2023.
