There is an ongoing fight against corruption at the Rivers State Police Command, as the force has arrested and started investigating police officers over charges that they are extorting citizens.
This is according to a statement issued on Tuesday by ASP Grace Iringe-Koko, the spokesperson for the Rivers State Police Command, following allegations made through the internet via a video showing the activities of ASP Omomefe Akin Geoffrey and other police officers extorting money from members of the public.
The statement noted that the Commissioner of Police, Rivers State, CP Olugbenga Adepoju, gave directives for the arrest, detention, and investigation of the policemen concerned following his awareness of such allegations.

It said such conduct is not in line with the basic principles and professional conduct of the Nigeria Police Force. Extortion and illegal money collection will not be condoned within the Force.
The Commissioner re-stated the determination of the Command to ensure that the officers maintain the required standard of behavior that will build trust and respect for human rights among the people.
He assured the people that the investigation into the matter would be carried out thoroughly, objectively, and fairly, and that any officer who would be found guilty would definitely be disciplined accordingly according to the law.
The Commissioner equally appreciated the efforts of the members of the public in bringing the matter to the knowledge of the Command and urged all concerned members of the public to continue reporting such cases of misconduct, corruption, and abuse of office.
The Rivers State Police Command stated that it continues to uphold the principles of professionalism, discipline, integrity, and quality service delivery within the state.
