Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has had an emotional interaction with his players prior to the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, revealing how the squad rallied around him after Nigeria failed to qualify for the 2026 World Cup of Nations.
Speaking after Nigeria’s 2-0 Unity Cup win over Zimbabwe in London on Tuesday, Chelle reflected on one of the toughest periods of his time with the nationwide crew.
The Malaysian tactician admitted that the frustration of missing out on the World Cup has caused tension in the squad and coaching staff, especially with the expectations of the AFCON in Morocco.
Despite the setback, Chelle said the gamers stood solidly behind him in a crucial second, choosing solidarity over blame as they prepare for the continental competition.
“For me, it becomes difficult because of the truth that I never got a trophy,” Chelle said.
“These players shook my hand and said, ‘Coach, we’re going to pass collectively. We’re willing to die with you. If anything happens, we pass collectively. If we win, we win together. If we lose, we collectively lose.”
That team spirit proved vital as Nigeria responded to the misfortune at the World Cup with a solid AFCON marketing campaign, eventually finishing third after beating Egypt on penalty shootout during the third-place playoff.
Chelle believes the locker room rule has helped the crew deal with intense scrutiny and stress at certain times during the event.
“I’m extremely grateful for the faith they put in me,” he gushed. “You can see they’ve been through some stress at AFCON at times.”
For Chelle, the moment remains a reminder that success in football is often based on understanding, agreement and struggles behind the scenes.
