‎Nigeria Expands Digital Forensics to Strengthen Cybersecurity

‎The Federal Government has intensified efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s cybersecurity architecture by expanding digital forensics capabilities across key institutions, a move aimed at improving the investigation and prosecution of cybercrime while enhancing national security.

‎The initiative was highlighted by the National Coordinator of the National Cybersecurity Coordination Centre (NCCC), who said digital forensics has become an essential tool in combating increasingly sophisticated cyber threats.

According to the coordinator, strengthening forensic capacity will enable security agencies to gather, preserve and analyse digital evidence more effectively, supporting successful investigations and prosecutions.

‎Officials noted that the expansion involves upgrading forensic laboratories, deploying modern investigative technologies and equipping personnel with specialised skills to address cyber incidents involving financial fraud, identity theft, ransomware, data breaches and other forms of cyber-enabled crime.

The programme also seeks to improve coordination among law enforcement agencies, regulators and the judiciary.

‎The government stressed that as Nigeria’s digital economy continues to grow, stronger cybersecurity measures are needed to protect critical national infrastructure, businesses and citizens from evolving cyber risks.

Expanding digital forensic capabilities is expected to improve incident response, support intelligence gathering and strengthen public confidence in digital services.

‎Authorities also underscored the importance of collaboration with local and international partners in advancing cybersecurity resilience.

They said knowledge sharing, technical assistance and capacity-building programmes would help Nigeria adopt global best practices in digital investigations and cyber defence.

‎Industry experts welcomed the initiative, describing digital forensics as a critical component of modern cybersecurity.

They noted that advanced forensic tools enable investigators to trace cyberattacks, recover deleted data, identify perpetrators and preserve electronic evidence in line with legal standards.

‎The expansion aligns with the Federal Government’s broader digital transformation agenda, which prioritises secure digital infrastructure and the protection of online transactions.

Officials expressed confidence that improved forensic capabilities will not only strengthen cybercrime enforcement but also create a safer digital environment for innovation, investment and economic growth.

‎The government reaffirmed its commitment to continuously investing in cybersecurity infrastructure and human capacity, stating that robust digital forensics will play a pivotal role in safeguarding Nigeria’s digital future and enhancing national resilience against emerging cyber threats.
