Ogoni Youth President Calls for Calm After Alleged NDDC Assault

After the alleged assault at the headquarters of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), the president-general of the Ogoni Youth Federation (OYF), Legborsi Yamaabana, has appealed for calm.

This appeal was disclosed in the notice shared with TCPN on Wednesday.
Yamaabana expressed concern over the widespread reactions that have trailed the incident, which reportedly occurred on 17 March during an official visit to the commission.

According to Hyacinth Ana, Senior Special Adviser on Media and Communication, the youth leader had gone to the NDDC on a peaceful assignment when the situation escalated.

The OYF President-General alleged that he was physically attacked in full public view by an individual identified as the Chief Security Officer to the Managing Director, Mr Sam.

Also, more details unveiled claims that the officer acted on instructions, leading to Yamaabana being pushed down a staircase, sustaining injuries, and losing personal belongings, including a damaged phone.

This disturbing incident indicated an outrage actually among Ogoni youths, Niger Delta stakeholders, and members of the international community.

Despite the anger generated by the development, Yamaabana urged restraint. He called on youths across Ogoniland and the wider Niger Delta region to remain peaceful and law-abiding, stressing that no immediate action should be taken.

“I feel your anger, but I urge calm,” the statement quoted him as saying, adding that a unified and appropriate response would be determined collectively at a later time.

The OYF also noted that the president-general would not be making further public comments for now, as he is currently preparing for the burial of his late father.

The organisation appealed for patience and understanding during this period, assuring that the matter would be addressed comprehensively after the mourning rites.

The statement further appreciated the solidarity and concern shown by Nigerians and the international community, reiterating the group’s commitment to pursuing justice through lawful means.
