OYF Raises Alarm Over Vandalism of Ogoni Water Projects, Vows to Expose Perpetrators

The Ogoni Youth Federation (OYF) has raised serious concerns over what it describes as politically motivated acts of sabotage targeting federally funded water infrastructure projects in Ogoniland, warning that those responsible will be exposed and prosecuted.

The youth body, in a statement signed by its President-General, Engr. Legborsi Yamaabana, expressed deep disappointment at the recent vandalism and interference affecting Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP) sites.

The body described the development as a direct attack on the progress and future of Ogoni communities.

According to the OYF, intelligence available suggests that the destructive activities are being coordinated by a small group of individuals within Ogoniland allegedly working to discredit HYPREP and undermine the ongoing clean-up and infrastructural renewal efforts for personal gain.

The Federation praised the Federal Government under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Federal Ministry of Environment, and HYPREP for what it described as renewed commitment to environmental restoration and development in the area.

It noted that communities across Khana, Gokana, Tai, and Eleme Local Government Areas are already witnessing tangible transformation, bringing new hope to the region.

However, the group warned that the progress could be jeopardised if criminal interference continues unchecked.

OYF called on security agencies to intensify surveillance around ongoing and completed federal projects in Ogoniland, while urging young people in the area to resist manipulation and refuse to be used as tools against the development of their land.

The organisation also pledged to work closely with law enforcement to identify and ensure the prosecution of those behind the sabotage, insisting that they would “name and shame” perpetrators if the attacks persist.

Reaffirming its commitment to peace and constructive engagement with government, OYF urged all stakeholders not to be distracted by the actions of a “misguided few,” stressing that the majority of Ogoni people support the ongoing interventions and are determined to see Ogoniland move forward.
