Rivers Ministry of Health: Awareness of Childhood Cancer

As the world observes Childhood Cancer Awareness Month from 20th September to 17th October, the Rivers State Ministry of Health is emphasizing the crucial role of early detection and timely treatment in improving survival rates for children with cancer.

With approximately 400,000 children diagnosed with cancer worldwide each year, the disease is a leading cause of death among children.

Nigeria faces significant challenges in treating childhood cancer, with a survival rate below 20%, starkly contrasting with over 80% in high-income countries like the United States. Late diagnosis, limited access to specialized treatment centers, and expensive treatment options exacerbate the problem.

Despite these challenges, Rivers State has made notable progress in healthcare infrastructure. The state boasts a Mother and Child Hospital that could serve as a hub for pediatric care, including cancer treatment.

Additionally, the Dr. Peter Odili Cancer and Cardiovascular Disease Diagnostic and Treatment Centre offers advanced healthcare services, including chemotherapy and nuclear medicine. Several organizations are working to support children with cancer and their families in Nigeria and Rivers State.

The Rivers State Ministry of Health emphasizes that early detection is critical in treating childhood cancer. Cancer is more likely to respond to effective treatment when identified early, resulting in a greater probability of survival, less suffering, and often less expensive and less intensive treatment.

The Ministry is working to raise awareness about the warning signs and symptoms of childhood cancer, emphasizing the need for prompt medical attention if suspicious symptoms are detected.

By working together, governments, organizations, and individuals can help improve survival rates and provide support to children with cancer and their families in Rivers State and beyond.
