Nigeria’s hopes of securing the international allegiance of Zachary Athekame have ended after the AC Milan defender made his senior debut for Switzerland in the UEFA Nations League.
Athekame, who was born in Geneva to a Nigerian father, had been viewed as a potential addition to the Super Eagles squad. However, his appearance in Switzerland’s 3-0 victory over North Macedonia has effectively tied his international future to the European nation.
The 21-year-old enjoyed an impressive debut, providing assists for two goals scored by Zeki Amdouni as Switzerland secured a comfortable win.
Swiss head coach Murat Yakin handed Athekame his first senior international appearance following the defender’s strong start to the season while on loan at French Ligue 1 side Lyon from AC Milan.
The right-back has been one of the standout young performers in Ligue 1 this season, contributing two goals and two assists in his opening five league matches.
Before earning his senior call-up, Athekame represented Switzerland 17 times at Under-21 level. He was also included in the senior squad for a 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Slovenia in October 2025 but remained an unused substitute.
His decision represents another setback for the Nigeria Football Federation’s efforts to attract dual-nationality players eligible for the Super Eagles.
Nigeria have previously missed out on several players with Nigerian heritage, including defender Manuel Akanji, forward Noah Okafor, midfielder Simon Sohm, defender Isaac Schmidt and Strasbourg player Eseosa Aigbogun, all of whom opted to represent Switzerland.
However, the Super Falcons have enjoyed greater success in this area. Defender Onyinyechi Zogg chose to represent Nigeria and has already earned two senior caps, although she remains eligible to play for Switzerland under FIFA regulations.
Athekame’s commitment to Switzerland closes the door on a potential international future with Nigeria, while strengthening the Swiss national team with one of Europe’s emerging defensive talents.
