FIFA Ranking: Falcons Remain on 36th Despite WAFCON Victory

‎Nigeria’s Super Falcons have stayed at 36th place in the latest FIFA Women’s World Ranking, which was released on Thursday. This follows their strong showing at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, where they won the tournament for the first time in 10 years, according to PUNCH Sports Extra.

‎Even though there were big changes in the global rankings, with Spain moving up to take the number one spot and Bangladesh making a huge jump of 24 places, Nigeria’s steady performance and strong position in Africa have kept them at their previous ranking from June.

‎The Super Falcons began the July international break with a scoreless friendly game against Portugal in Lisbon, but they soon shifted their focus to the WAFCON tournament.

‎In Group B, they beat Tunisia and Botswana confidently. Then they had a draw with Algeria in their last group match, which didn’t affect their top spot in the group. Coach Justine Madugu decided to rest some of the main players for that game.

‎With a clear aim of winning the continental title again, the Falcons completely outplayed Zambia in the quarter-finals, winning 5-0. This match was seen as a form of revenge, as Zambia had beaten Nigeria in the third-place playoff of the last WAFCON in 2022.

‎In the semi-final against the defending champions, South Africa, Nigeria showed great composure and won 2-1.

‎In the final, they faced the host nation, Morocco. The Super Falcons pulled off a remarkable comeback, coming from behind to win 3-2 in what is already being called one of the best matches in WAFCON history.

‎Their record of five wins and one draw throughout the tournament has slightly boosted their ranking points.

‎Nigeria now has 1630.83 points, which is a 7.54 increase from the previous total of 1623.29, making them the top-ranked African country by a large margin.
