A group of youths in Eleme Local Government Area of Rivers State reportedly raided a woman’s residence on August 17, 2026, alleging that the premises contained items they described as “demonic ritual setups.”
The youths were reportedly led by Comrade Gift Aken and Pastor Arun Ejor, who said the action was necessary to protect members of the community.
Videos from the incident circulating online show a distressed woman at the scene, while a man is heard explaining the reasons for the action.
According to those involved, the raid was linked to claims surrounding traditional religious practices in the Onne area, with references made to an alleged 1973 decision to end idolatry in the community.
Supporters of the action have described it as an attempt to protect residents from practices they consider harmful. However, critics have questioned the legality of the raid and warned against individuals taking enforcement into their own hands.
The controversy has also renewed discussions around Section 38 of the Nigerian Constitution, which guarantees freedom of thought, conscience and religion, including the freedom to practise or manifest one’s religion or belief.
Critics are therefore calling for the circumstances surrounding the incident to be properly investigated by relevant authorities rather than being handled through vigilante action.
The videos have continued to generate reactions online, with the incident sparking debate over the balance between community safety, traditional beliefs, religious freedom and the rule of law.
