The Nigerian Senate and the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) have intensified efforts to strengthen the country’s digital economy through legislative reforms, including proposed amendments to the Cybercrime Act and the advancement of a National Digital Economy and E-Governance framework.
Chairman of the Senate Committee on ICT and Cyber Security, Senator Shuaib Salisu, disclosed that the National Assembly is reviewing existing laws to ensure they align with global technological developments and emerging cybersecurity challenges. According to him, the Senate is committed to creating a legal environment that supports innovation, attracts investment, and promotes trust in Nigeria’s rapidly expanding digital ecosystem.
Salisu explained that lawmakers are taking a fresh look at the Cybercrime Act to address new threats posed by cybercriminals and the growing influence of artificial intelligence. He noted that consultations have been held with the Federal Ministry of Justice, international partners, and cybersecurity experts to examine global best practices, including provisions contained in international cybercrime conventions.
The Senate is also advancing the National Digital Economy and E-Governance Bill, which seeks to provide a comprehensive framework for electronic transactions, digital signatures, electronic contracts, data governance, and the deployment of digital public services. The legislation is expected to accelerate the digitisation of government operations and improve service delivery across public institutions.
Speaking on the initiative, National Commissioner of the NDPC, Dr. Vincent Olatunji, emphasized the importance of data protection in building confidence in the digital economy. He said Nigeria’s Data Protection Act and the establishment of an independent data protection authority demonstrate the government’s commitment to safeguarding personal data and supporting digital business activities.
Stakeholders believe the proposed reforms will strengthen cybersecurity, encourage innovation, improve investor confidence, and position Nigeria as a leading digital economy in Africa while ensuring that citizens’ data and online activities remain protected.
