Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has said democracy remains the most effective form of government for Nigeria, stressing that the country’s rich ethnic, cultural and religious diversity requires a system that guarantees inclusion and equal representation.
In a Democracy Day message released on Thursday through his Chief Press Secretary, Onwuka Nzeshi, the governor congratulated Nigerians both at home and abroad as the nation marked the June 12 anniversary.
Fubara described the occasion as a reminder of the sacrifices made by many Nigerians in the struggle for democratic governance.
He said the annual celebration honours those who fought for justice, civil liberties and the right of citizens to choose their leaders through the ballot box.
He paid tribute to the late Chief M.K.O. Abiola, Kudirat Abiola and several other pro-democracy campaigners whose efforts contributed significantly to the country’s return to democratic rule.
According to him, their courage and commitment to the people’s mandate remain worthy of recognition and remembrance.
The governor noted that Nigeria’s democratic journey has recorded steady progress since the historic June 12, 1993 presidential election, despite facing numerous political and institutional challenges over the years.
He maintained that the country’s diversity should be embraced as a source of strength rather than division, adding that effective leadership and strong institutions can transform those differences into opportunities for national growth and development.
Fubara also commended Nigerians for their continued faith in the democratic process, saying the ability of citizens to freely express their views, participate in governance and determine leadership through elections reflects the resilience of the nation’s democracy.
The governor further acknowledged the efforts of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration in addressing economic and security challenges through its Renewed Hope Agenda.
He expressed hope that ongoing reforms would contribute to national stability and improved living conditions for citizens.
Reaffirming his administration’s commitment to development, Fubara said Rivers State would continue to collaborate with the Federal Government in areas such as infrastructure, job creation, education, healthcare and public safety.
He urged Nigerians to uphold democratic values beyond election periods by promoting accountability, fairness and respect for the rule of law.
He added that national progress would depend on the willingness of citizens and leaders alike to place the country’s interests above personal considerations.
Fubara expressed confidence that with unity, cooperation and sustained commitment to democratic principles, Nigeria could achieve greater prosperity and build a better future for coming generations.
