In a move to reduce carbon emissions, tackle unemployment and promote renewable energy solutions in Ogoniland and the wider Niger Delta, the Lekeh Development Foundation has trained 20 youths in solar installation, maintenance and entrepreneurship.
The two-week intensive vocational training was organised in collaboration with Our Kids Climate Microgrant (OKS), equipping participants with practical skills in solar panel installation, system maintenance, repairs and basic business development.
Speaking at the graduation ceremony over the weekend, Executive Director of the foundation, Friday Nbani, said the initiative was designed to empower women and young people with green skills that would position them for sustainable livelihoods.
He explained that the programme aligns with the organisation’s climate action objectives, particularly in addressing environmental degradation caused by decades of fossil fuel extraction in Ogoniland.
“Solar energy is one of the most powerful tools to respond to the environmental challenges in oil-impacted communities. It reduces dependence on petrol and diesel and helps cut carbon emissions,” Nbani said.
According to him, over 58 applicants indicated interest in the training, but 20 participants were selected based on passion and performance during interviews and orientation.
Nbani added that the foundation received support from partners including the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the GEF Small Grants Programme, the Africa Just Transition Network and the Global Green Grants Fund, which provided tools and technical support for the training.
Facilitator of the programme, Frank Joel, an electrical engineer, stressed that transitioning from fossil fuels to renewable energy is critical to restoring the Niger Delta environment.
He noted that participants underwent rigorous theoretical and practical sessions, including energy auditing, panel installation, system configuration and maintenance procedures.
Joel expressed confidence that the graduates are equipped to establish solar technician centres, secure contracts and contribute to cleaner energy adoption in their communities.
Some beneficiaries expressed appreciation to the foundation and its partners, describing the training as life-changing and a pathway to economic independence while promoting environmental sustainability.
